Since 2009 nearly 21 tons of garbage and debris has been cleared from Lake Sharpe by over 700 volunteers. The clean-up is coordinated by the Izaak Walton League, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, U-S Fish and Wildlife Service, the Army Corps of Engineers and the Cities of Pierre and Fort Pierre.
