Track and Field Season Closes on Saturday

Track and field finished its season with the state meet on Friday and Saturday as the Pierre Governors, Stanley County Buffaloes and Sully Buttes Chargers competed in the likes of Sturgis, Spearfish and Rapid City.

On day one for the Governors, Jessica Lutmer finished in the top 10 in ninth place in the 3200 meter run while Hannah Lemieux also was ninth in the discus throw finishing just ahead of teammate Maya Shorter in tenth place. On day two, Lutmer secured another top 10 finish as she was eighth in the 1600 meter run while Jack Merkwan finished in seventh place and Sydney Tedrow was ninth in the 300 meter hurdles. The team of Tucker Putzier, Caden Thompson, Josh Strand and Hayden Shaffer finished seventh in the 1600 meter medley while the girls team of Sydney Uhrig, Addison Cumbow, Autumn Iverson and Lutmer finished in ninth place. Cole Peterson finished in ninth place in the 200 meter dash to round the Governors placing in the top ten for the state meet.

For Stanley County over the first day, the Buffaloes had Evan Nordstrom finish fifth in the Class A 100 meter dash with a time of 11.27. The 4×200 relay team finished in ninth place while Tracy Nielson was sixth in the discus throw with teammate Nathan Cook finishing in tenth to wrap up the first day. On day two, the team of Fredericksen Andrew, Trey Frost, Nathan Cook and Evan Nordstrom placed sixth in the 4×100 relay as Andrew also placed fifth in the 400 meter dash. Cook had the best finish of any Buffalo as he placed third in the shot put of 49-11. As a team the Buffs finished in 11th place in Class A.

In Class B, Sully Buttes’ Stevie Wittler finished in seventh place in 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.55 as Jesse Schall was sixth in the discus throw. Those were two of just four athletes competing in day one for the Chargers. Wittler improved on day two with a fifth place finish in the 300 meter hurdles as she was the only Charger to place inside of the top 10 in the second day.
