Leingang Wins State Title, Governors Finish Tied for Fifth at State Tournament

Tuesday wrapped up the 2021 Tennis season for the Pierre Governors as several players went home with some hardware with Luke Leingang winning a state championship and the team finished tied for fifth place.

In Singles competition, Leingang, in Flight 3 made quick work of both opponents on Tuesday even with a rain delay and having to move indoors as he won 6-4, 6-0 in the semifinals and 6-3, 6-3 in the state championship match. Matt Hanson won both of his matches along with Spencer Kelly in flights 1 and 4 to take home the consolation championship. Blake Judson, in flight 2 was unable to get the win in the fifth place match for Pierre.

For the doubles, Leingang and Spencer Kelly finished third in the state beating the top seed Huron team 8-6. Hanson and Judson along with the team of Jacob Mayer and Denton Beck each lost in the consolation championship to close out the tournament.

Beck was the lone senior on this year’s team and Steele says they will miss him…

Overall, Pierre finished with 259.5 points which was fifth best along with Lennox. Sioux Falls Christian won the team championship with 450 points.
