The Pierre Governors, Stanley County Buffaloes and Sully Buttes Chargers were all apart of eight total teams at Hollister Field on Tuesday for the Capitol City Qualifier.
For the Pierre Governors, the team had plenty of winners on its last home track event of the season as Addison Cumbow and Jack Merkwan swept the girls and boys 100 and 110 meter hurdles. Merkwan also won the 300 meter hurdles for Pierre. Both the boys and girls 4×200 and 4×100 relay teams won for the Governors on the evening. Jessica Lutmer and Hayden Shaffer both won the girls and boys 1600 meter run. Marissa Matthews and Canyon Jones each won the pole vault event while Lincoln Kienholz and Aliese Christopherson swept the long jump with Kienholz also winning the high jump and Houston Lunde won the boys discus throw and Josh Strand won the 400 meter run.
For the Stanley County Buffaloes, Evan Nordstrom picked up a win in the 100 and 200 meter dash while Nathan Cook was the winner in the boys shot put.
Sully Buttes’ Stevie Wittler won the 300 meter hurdles as the 1600 meter sprint medley team also won on the day for the two Charger wins in Pierre.
It was senior night for the Governors as the track and field seniors were honored at the midway point of the day. Head Coach of the Pierre Governor track and field team, Greg Starr says this senior class is a really good talented group…
Because of the loss season Starr says it was still easy moving into the year with the talent they had but he says the most difficult thing coming in to the season was the routine of everything…
And Starr says the most important thing this late in the season is consistency…
You can see a full list of the results below. Stanley County will compete again on Friday as they head to Kimball. The Chargers will host the Central South Dakota Conference Track meet on Saturday and Pierre will travel to Aberdeen for the second time in as many Saturdays for the ESD Track meet.
