Monday morning, Team South Dakota 16U Boys would fall in overtime to the Atlanta Fire 4-3, taking second place in the Tier II 16U National Tournament.
South Dakota had a turnover in front of their own net and Atlanta scored the first goal of the game but it wasn’t 1-0 for long as South Dakota answered with Cory Perdaems getting a pass in front of the net to tie it at 1-1. Atlanta would answer back to make it 2-1 early in the second period but it was Dre Berndt and Ashton Griese assisting Cade Edwards on the power play goal tie the game a second time. But the Fire would again score in the third period to take a 3-2 lead. On a delayed penalty, Cam Ponto found himself in front of the net wide open and Team South Dakota answered one more time, forcing overtime. However, it was Atlanta that would score last with around four minutes to play in overtime and take the championship.
Assistant Coach and Pierre native, Curtis Egan, says even though the championship game didn’t finish the way they were hoping, it was still a great week…
Egan says for this team to comeback three times shows how resilient this group is…
Egan enjoys being able to coach some of the Oahe Capitals players again and he says both Berndt and Griese were great in reaching the championship and in the championship contest…
In all, Team South Dakota saw three of the four teams reach Sunday, two in the semifinals and a National Runner-Up. Team South Dakota tryouts are already coming up in a month for the 2021-2022 year. June 4-6 in Sioux Falls there will be tryouts for a girls only 12U and 19U team with a boys and girls 14U and 16U teams. For more information you can contact Jenni Wirkus at [email protected]
