Baseball Gets Two Much Needed Wins on Saturday to Split Weekend

The Pierre Governor baseball team, after being swept on Friday by Roosevelt 5-2 and 7-0, came back to win both games on Saturday to even the record on the weekend and staying eight games over .500 at 12-4.

In the first game against Yankton, Lincoln Kienholz led off with a triple and Maguire Raske drove him in with an RBI single and the Govs were off from there. Raske, Kienholz, Isaac Polak and Elliot Leif each had an RBI in the 4-1 win. Kienholz went 4-4 in the game. Polak was the winning pitcher throwing four innings allowing just one run on three hits with three strike outs. Jackson Edman finished the final three innings allow just two hits and struck out two. A day after the Governors struggled to keep away from the walks, the two pitchers combined for just one walk over the seven innings.

In game two it was a seesaw and roller coaster of a game as Pierre won 11-10 in eight innings over O’Gorman. Kienholz again led off the game with a triple as Raske brought him in again but both teams traded blows the entire game. Tied at 1-1 in the second inning, Pierre scored four times looking to take a hold on the game. However, O’Gorman answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull within one. The Knights would put a five spot on the board in the bottom of the third taking a 9-7 lead before Pierre would answer with two runs on one wild pitch as the catcher couldn’t locate the ball. The game remain tied at 10-10 after seven innings thanks to Leif’s performance on the mound. He threw five innings and after giving up his lone run on three hits in the fourth, he allowed just one base runner the rest of the way striking out eight. Jake Mayer singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth after Andy Gordon shot a lead-off double over the head of the right fielder.

The Governors will have six games this week with a doubleheader on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. All six games will be on Today’s KCCR, todayskccr.com and on YouTube at KCCR Sports beginning with the doubleheader on Wednesday with first pitch at 5:00.
