Maya Shorter and Hayden Shaffer both on the track and field team were selected as this week’s PACA Athletes of the Week. Here are the nominations from their Coach, Greg Starr.
Maya Shorter (Track & Field): Maya had an impressive two day stretch last week. Maya was able to throw the discus for the first time in a few weeks at Sully Buttes and set a PR and the top distance on our team. The following day, on Friday at the American Legion Relays, she topped her PR by almost ten feet with a throw of 104’2”. She is now ranked 8th in the state in the discus and 12th in the shot put. Maya is working extremely hard in the weight room and in the rings and her hard work is beginning to show in her competitions.
Hayden Shaffer (Track & Field): Hayden Shaffer is the epitome of a team leader. Is work ethic on and off the track has not only lead him to numerous PR’s this year but has also helped guide the way for others on our team and show them what it takes to excel. This past week at the Pierre American Legion relays he recorded another 7 second PR in the 3200 on his way to placing first. His time of 10:13 currently puts him the top 8 in AA. Hayden also placed 4th in the 1600 with another PR. What people don’t see about Hayden is what he is doing behind the scenes to get better. Every morning he is out putting in miles along with the practices we have in the afternoon. He has goals set for the year and providing himself with every opportunity to reach those goals.
