The Hughes County Commission approved a motion to open up the position of Sheriff immediately until the position is filled. The next appointed Sheriff will have to run for election to retain the duty until the next regular Sheriff’s election. Johnson was appoint Hughes County Sheriff in January of 2019 to replace former Sheriff Mike Leidholt who was selected by Governor Kristi Noem to become Secretary of the Department of Corrections.
