PIERRE — Today marks a special at 106 West Capitol Avenue; the 62nd trip around the sun for Today’s KCCR. The Federal Communications Commission granted a construction permit for the station on November 5th of 1958. Back in the late 1958 it cost less than 10-thousand dollar to build a radio station. KCCR first took the airwaves of central South Dakota on February 4th 1959 on a frequency of 1590 kilohertz. KCCR stayed at 1590 on your radio dial until 1965 when the frequency was changed, with the help of then U-S Senator George McGovern, to the 1240 kilohertz you hear today. KCCR’s original 200 foot tower was sited east of what’s now Hillsview Golf Course and came from the South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City. The tower site was moved in 1981 to its current location north of the Izaac Walton clubhouse. KCCR has been housed in four different studio locations over the years. One at 119 West Sioux or the First National Bank Building, a location at 333 and a half South Pierre street and two locations on West Capitol, 110 and the current 106 West Capitol. The station moved to its current location in late 1970.
