Capitals Fall Just Short of Upset over Brookings

The Oahe Capitals and Brookings Rangers played through two scoreless periods before the Caps were unable to hold on to a 1-0 lead and fell to the Rangers 3-1 in the first round of the girls state tournament.

Kiersten Miller scored the first goal of the game early on in the third period to give the Capitals the lead 1-0 over the third seeded Rangers looking for the upset. Oahe was outshot throughout the game, but a shot from the point found its way in to give Oahe the lead. However, with 3:30 left the Rangers Kenzey Grendler threw a shot to the net and beat Abagail Stewart-Fromm who was magnificent in the game to tie the game at 1-1. 12 seconds laters, Savannah Barber would score again to give the Rangers a 2-1 and a late third period goal with 45 seconds allowed Brookings to escape with a 3-1 win. Stewart-Fromm made 42 saves on 45 shots and was the player of the game to applause of both teams and fan bases.

Oahe will face Sioux Center at 11:30 Saturday morning in the consolation bracket. Watertown will face Rushmore in the other consolation game at 2:00. Sioux Falls will face Brookings in the first semifinal at 4:30 and then Aberdeen and Mitchell at 7:00. All four games will be on Capital City Rock and on YouTube at Capital City Rock Sports.
