Charger Basketball Teams Get Doubleheader Sweep Tuesday Night

The Sully Buttes Charger girls and boys basketball teams picked up big wins Tuesday night against Region 6B opponent Herreid Selby Area, with the girls winning 45-37, while the Charger boys scratched out a 49-44 victory over the Wolverines.

The Charger girls were tied after one quarter, and trailed 23-21 at the half, but outscored Herreid Selby Area 24-14 in the second half to secure the victory, and push their record to 13-2. The Chargers were led in scoring by Lydia Hill, who finished with 19 points, while Stevie Wittler added 16, and hit six of ten free throws. The 6-11 Wolverines had balanced scoring, with three players scoring seven points apiece, and one player with six.

Meanwhile the 4-11 Sully Buttes Charger boys surprised the 10-6 Wolverines with back cuts to the basket, solid rebounding, and stingy defense in their victory. The Chargers led 30-25 at the half, and 40-34 after three quarters. Senior Landon Hepker led the way with 17 points, while Thomas Farries and Wesley Wittler each added 12 in the victory. Herreid Selby Area was led in scoring by Tray Hettick and Brendan Begeman, each notching 13 points. Begeman, who has committed to play football for SDSU in the fall left midway through the second half with a sprained ankle, and didn’t return.

Next up for Sully Buttes is a girls-boys doubleheader Thursday in Mobridge, against Mobridge Pollock. Both JV games will be played at the same time in two gyms, and the girls will start a little earlier, at 5:15, with the boys game to follow.
