Governors Hang Tough, Fall to Harrisburg in State Quarters

The Pierre Governor girls soccer team played to a 1-1 tie at the end of the first half, but it was the Harrisburg Tigers, the top seed in the state with a 4-1 in the state quarterfinals on Saturday.

Abigail Flanagan scored the opening goal for the Tigers with 27 minutes remaining as the Tigers controlled the first part of the game. However, a hand ball against Harrisburg inside their own box gave Bria Sargent a penalty kick opportunity which she drove in with 14:12 remaining in the half to tie the score at 1-1. The Governors played even with the Tigers turning away chance after chance before the leading goal scorer in the state, Haliee Christensen scored twice 11 minutes a part to put the Tigers up 3-1. Pierre had to press to look for a tying goal and Harrisburg was able to take advantage to finish with a three goal win. Ireland Templeton had eight saves for Pierre as the Govs were outshot 27-5.

Harrisburg advances to the state semifinals on Tuesday while the Governors season comes to an end at 9-5-1.
