Thursday night is a special night in Onida as the Sully Buttes Chargers will take on the Mobridge-Pollock Tigers in a girls and boys doubleheader. What makes the night special is it’s Hall of Fame night as Coach Mark Senftner and Katelynn Lamb Pottorff will be inducted in this year’s Sully Buttes Hall of Fame.
Both games should be good ones as the girls game features two high win teams. The Chargers are still in first place in the 2B standings at 13-3, but Mobridge-Pollock is in second in the 6A standings and at 11-3 and have won nine of the last 10 games heading into the game. The Charger girls have won seven straight and have just three games left after Thursday’s contest.
The Charger boys have dropped three straight and are 5-10 and are in seventh place in the 2B standings. Right now, the Chargers will have to win three games in the Region tournament to make the SoDak 16. Mobridge-Pollock is 7-4 on the season and have won three straight prior to the contest on Thursday. The Tigers and Chargers have both beaten Miller and lost to Herreid/Selby Area while the Tigers were able to defeat Aberdeen Roncalli while the Chargers fell to the Cavaliers.
Thursday will feature Coach Mark Senftner and Katelynn Lamb Pottorff being inducted into the Sully Buttes Hall of Fame for the Class of 2022. Pottorff is a former player under Senftner and was part of the state championship winning team in her senior season in 2007. The Chargers have won state titles under Senftner in 2007, 2008, 2016 and 2017. The Chargers have also been to the state title game in 2012 and 2015 under Senftner. In his 17th season, which began in 2005, Senftner has a record of 327-78 and reached the 500 win mark earlier this season in his head coaching career beginning in Timber Lake. Senftner has also accumulated over 100 wins as the Sully Buttes football coach and has made three trips to the dome in 2015, 2017 and 2018. Mark and his wife, Lynn have two sons, Tate and Scott, both exceptional athletes during their time at Sully Buttes. They are members of St. Piux X Catholic Church.
Pottorff, in her time with the Sully Buttes Chargers from 2003-2007, became the all-time points leader in Charger history with 1875 and it stood until 2017. She was a three sport athlete at Sully Buttes, qualifying for the state golf tournament each of her last three years and reaching as high as top five in the state her senior year. Pottorff was also selected to the All-State volleyball team her senior campaign and was voted to the All-Tournament team at the state tournament in 2007. Katelynn played at Black Hills State as a dual sport athlete as part of the golf and basketball team. Black Hills State made the NAIA tournament four years while she was there and she finished her career with the second most points at 1711 and also second all-time in a season with 533. Katelynn currently lives in Belle Fourche with her husband Clay and four children, Harper, Hallie, Cameron and Kellen.
Congratulations to both Mark Senftner and Katelynn Lamb Pottorff on being inducted to the Sully Buttes Hall of Fame in 2022.
