The Pierre Governors held the Watertown offense to just one score and a safety as they beat the six seeded Arrows 38-9 to advance to the state semifinal next week Friday.
The Governors took the opening drive just 29 yards on eight plays to score first on one of two Lincoln Kienholz touchdown runs. Watertown took its first play to tie the game up at 7-7 with a 74 yard catch from Cole Holden. Then the defense clamped down and did not allow another point. Drew Norberg finished the night 9-23 for 183 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Norberg also lost a fumble as the Watertown season ends at 3-7.
Lincoln Kienholz finished the night 16-29 for 293 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. Kienholz hit Jack Merkwan for a 40 yard reception to give the Govs a 28-9 lead and then found Brecken Krueger in the end zone from 23 yards out to seal the win at 38-9. Cole Peterson also kicked a 26 yard field goal for the Govs. Kienholz, who finished the night with 293 yards broke Peyton Zabel’s career and single season passing yard mark eclipsing the 5012 career yards and 2724 single season yards.
The Governors will now host the Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles next Friday after the Golden Eagles beat the two seed, Brookings 42-34 in Brookings. Coverage will be on KCCR, kccrradio.com and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Greg Dean on the call.
