Girls Sweep, Boys Split as Pierre Soccer Opens Year with Success out West

The Pierre Governor soccer teams opened up its season on Friday and Saturday against Douglas and Spearfish and the Governors are coming back winning three of the four games in total which concluded with a girls sweep.

The boys routed Douglas on Friday night behind a Cole Peterson hat trick with a 6-0 win. Steven Blanchette, Rylan Derry and Cordell Schlichenmayer also scored for the Governors in the win. The offense continued to fire on Saturday against Spearfish as Peterson would score his fourth goal of the weekend on a penalty kick as did Derry. In a 2-2 tie at halftime, the Governors were able to score with Derry scoring his second of the game, however, the Spartans would strike three times in the second half to take a 5-3 win. A great offensive output by the Governors, though, in the first weekend of the season as they scored nine times and are 1-1 heading into the first home game on Thursday.

The girls team would dominate on Friday, ending the game early with a 10-0 win over the Douglas Patriots. Elli Hughes and Avery Davis led the way each with two goals while Ryann Barry, Oksana Mutchelknaus, Kyanne Beck and Ava Flottmeyer all scored a goal along with an own goal on Friday. On Saturday, it was much of the same defense with the Govs shutting out Spearfish 2-0 for the win. Mutchelknaus and Lexi Campea both scored in the first half for Pierre. It’s a 2-0 start for Pierre which they will use the momentum against Roosevelt on Thursday.

The Governors will play Roosevelt at home on Thursday. The girls will play at 4:00 followed by the boys with both games on KCCR, kccrradio.com and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
