The Calgary Hitmen would announce on Friday a new captain on the team and it’s Pierre native and former Oahe Capital, Carter Sanderson, making him the 34th captain in team history.
It’s the second time Sanderson has been named captain on his hockey journey through juniors as he was named as the Muskegon Lumberjacks captain prior to playing in Sioux Falls last January and led the USHL team to a second straight championship appearance. Now, it would take just seven games into the season and only five games for Sanderson to be named the new captain. Heading into the weekend, Sanderson is leading the team in points and goals through seven full games for the Hitmen who are 4-3 on the year. Sanderson has 10 points in five games averaging two points per game and has seven goals scoring over a goal per game. The sixth round Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick has had a strong last 15 months since being drafted. Two different captains, a World Junior A Challenge gold medalist, part of the world junior summer showcase trying to make the world junior roster and an invite to the Pittsburgh training camp.
Sanderson is named the 34th captain in team history and the first American since Mark Kastelic in 2018-2020. Kastelic currently plays for the Boston Bruins. The 6’2, 196 pound power forward is still committed to the University of North Dakota. Calgary Hitmen games are available to watch on YouTube for free throughout the season.
