For the first time since 2018, the Pierre Governor girls soccer team is back in the state championship on Saturday as the Govs take on the Harrisburg Tigers looking to stop their four-peat.
The top two teams in Class AA will meet in Watertown on Saturday fighting for the state championship after playing to a 0-0 draw back at the end of the regular season. For Pierre, it’s been three of the last four games ending with a 0-0 draw. It’s just the Governors have two wins out of it, beating Brookings and O’Gorman in penalty kicks to reach the state championship. Harrisburg did have to win in overtime in the quarterfinals over Watertown 3-2, but beat Yankton 2-0 this past Tuesday to reach the semifinals. Saturday, the two teams will meet on the neutral site with the state title on the line. Last year, Harrisburg beat the Governors in the state semifinals in Harrisburg. The Governors are 14-1-1 while Harrisburg is 15-0-2.
Coverage of the game is scheduled for 12:30 with a 1:00 kickoff on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports. Because of SDHSAA rules, there will be no video for the game, it will only be available as a streaming option to listen to the game. Jon Winkler will have the call.
