HURON, (KCCR) — A Ree Heights woman was honored last weekend as the 2026 Spirit of Dakota winner. This year marked the 40th anniversary of the annual award that recognizes an outstanding South Dakota woman who reflects the Spirit of Dakota through her leadership, vision, courage and character and who inspires others to make a difference. Candice Lockner was nominated by Daniel Palmer. Lockner had dedicated her life to implementing rotational grazing and conservation practices and shares what she has learned with young ranch families who look to improve the quality of their acres. Lockner also worked with the Hand County Commission to begin that county’s first set of zoning ordinances. She has also traveled to Washington, D. C. to advocate for not only her ranch but discuss federal policies aimed at improving the condition of grasslands while supporting the state’s farmers and ranchers. A total of 14 women were nominated this year including Danielle Rausch of Onida. The Spirit of Dakota is held in Huron where the Spirit of Dakota statue is located. Statue sculptor Dale Lamphere was a special guest for the 40th anniversary celebration and award.
