The Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League is set to start the season on Friday facing the Red Deer Rebels, but former Oahe Capital and Pierre native Carter Sanderson will be joining the team later this month.
Sanderson’s summer has been filled with a lot of success starting with signing with the Hitmen at the end of June. He played at the World Junior Summer Showcase leaving a satisfying mark to potentially make the World Junior team this winter. Sanderson also played at the Prospects Tournament for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Now, Sanderson is staying in Pittsburgh for the next week as he participates in training camp before he heads to the WHL in Calgary. Once there, Sanderson will make his debut and will look to help lead the Hitmen to the playoffs and hope to reach the WHL championship for the first time since 2010. All home games will be in the historical Scotiabank Saddledome which will be played for the final season and is also the home of the NHL’s Calgary Flames. Sanderson scored 22 goals and had 23 assists in two seasons with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL.
The WHL season begins on Friday with the Hitmen playing the Red Deer Rebels with an 8:00 Central Time puck drop in Calgary. All WHL games will stream free on YouTube.
