This past weekend, the Independence Baseball League would add a new team to its official roster with the Gering Sugar Beats joining the ILB.
Gering, Nebraska has gone through a restructure especially over the last summer. The town had two summer collegiate teams this past year as the Western Nebraska Pioneers were joined by the Nebraska Outlaws. However, the owners of both teams are stepping away with the Pioneers shutting down and the Outlaws moving to Colorado and staying a part of the Front Row League. It leaves the door open for a new team to come in and the Sugar Beets will be the team. The Western Nebraska Pioneers were one of the original Expedition League teams with the Pierre Trappers.
The Sugar Beets will join Pierre’s Oahe Zap, Spearfish Sasquatch and Casper Spuds as full time ILB teams. The Bison, who were based out of Pierre the last couple of summers have been a travel team playing Independence League teams, but have been trying to join the league full time and to have its permanent location in Mitchell. If the Bison are able to join the league it will be five full time teams for the 2027 summer.
The Independence League runs from the end of May through end of July and beginning of August.
