PIERRE, (KCCR) — Recent rains are making a dent in South Dakota’s drought. Drought free areas in central South Dakota have expanded in the last week. Hughes County is now 88-percent drought free, up 22-percent from last week with abnormally dry areas declining 22-percent to 11-percent. Drought is unchanged this week in Stanley County. Hyde County is now 4-percent drought-free, up 25-percent while abnormally dry fell 25-percent with moderate and severe drought unchanged at 48-percent and one-point-five percent respectively. Hand County saw no drought grow to nine-percent from nearly zero last week. South central South Dakota benefited by rain. Moderate drought was nearly eliminated last week from Mellette County with D-1 drought falling 67-percent to one-point-five percent. Moderate drought declined 18-percent in Tripp County. Severe drought was eliminated from Jackson County this week with moderate drought falling 40-percent. Statewide, areas of drought fell to seven-percent, while abnormally dry grew to 92-percent. Moderate drought declined to 68-percent, severe to 35-percent and extreme to seven-percent.
