The Stanley County Buffaloes would play in one of the best games of the weekend, knocking off the Hill City Rangers 28-20 Friday night at home at Ole Williamson Field in the last minute.
Max Foth, head coach of the Stanley County Buffaloes said heading into the week you see the most improvement from game one to game two, especially with a young team. The improvement would be seen on the field Friday night as the Buffs beat a high quality 9AA team. It didn’t start out the way the Buffs were hoping to though. The opening kickoff was taken to the house from Mason Beuhler and the Rangers would score just 12 seconds into the game. The Buffs would be able to get the answering strike in the final minute of the first quarter as Bryant Zeeb would score the first points of the season on a three yard QB keeper making it 7-6 at the end of the first quarter. Stanley County’s first lead of the season came on another Zeeb touchdown, this time on fourth and three from the five yard line and it was 12-7 Stanley County after both two point conversions failed. A backwards pass inside the Hill City territory would be bobbled by Stanley County and with the fumble, the Rangers’ Alan Harvey would scoop and score and give the Rangers a 14-12 lead at halftime.
In the second half, after Hill City scored its first offensive touchdown to lead 20-12, Stanley Count would drive down the field and Zeeb would score his third touchdown of the game from 13 yards out and would score the two point conversion to tie the game at 20. The score remained tied until the final minutes of the fourth quarter when Zeeb would find Carson Bourne in the flat and Bourne would shake three different defenders to reach the end zone and score to give the Buffs the lead with 1:15 to play. With the two point conversion good, Stanley County would get one more defensive stop holding Hill City to just one offensive touchdown as the Rangers fall to 0-2 while Stanley County improves to 1-1.
The Buffaloes will travel to Bennett County for its third game of the season. The Warriors are 1-1 after its 42-6 win over New Underwood. Kickoff is at 7:00 Central Time.
