PIERRE, (KCCR) — A family was displaced Friday afternoon by a residential fire. Pierre Fire Chief Ian Paul says firefighters were called to the 100 block of Hampton Drive in north Pierre around 12:30 for the blaze. Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke and flame coming from the structure. Flames were noticed at the rear of the building and firefighters began an interior attack on the blaze, where they were successful in stopping the fire’s forward movement. No one was in the residence at the time, however three adults and one child were displaced. The American Red Cross and family are helping the home’s residents with temporary accommodations. Paul says multiple family pets died in the fire. The home sustained heat damage at the rear of the building with smoke damage throughout. While the fire remains under investigation, officials believe the fire began inside the home near a clothes dryer. Crews were on scene about 90 minutes. Assisting Pierre Fire, were the Pierre Police, Fort Pierre Fire A-M-R Ambulance, Central South Dakota Communications and local law enforcement.
