The Pierre Governor volleyball team is opening the season tonight and Saturday with matchups against the Rapid City schools hosting both Stevens and Central.
The Governors are coming off a season in which they failed to make the SoDak 16 and don’t bring back a lot of experience so while there are still some seniors and juniors, there will be a lot of girls getting their first taste of varsity action this weekend. The Govs open the season with a tough challenge as Stevens was 14 games over .500 last year even though they didn’t make the state tournament being upset by Jefferson. The Raiders only graduate four from last year’s team. Pierre was swept by the Raiders last year.
On Saturday, Pierre faces the Rapid City Central Cobblers, who went 9-22 last season, but also beat the Govs in four sets in Rapid City last year. But this year, the Cobblers will look a lot different. 11 seniors graduated for the Cobblers and only four members return from last season’s varsity roster. The challenge will still be there for the Governors, but Rapid City Central will also be playing its second game of the weekend after playing against Aberdeen Central tonight.
Both volleyball games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call. Tonight’s coverage begins around 6:00 with a 6:30 first serve. Saturday’s coverage begins around 11:30 with first serve scheduled for 12:00.
