The Pierre Governor football team has to wait one extra day to start the 2026 season as the defending 11AA state champions host the Sturgis Scoopers Saturday evening at Hollister Field.
While nearly every other team will play tonight, the Pierre Governors have to wait until Saturday, and Steve Steele head coach of the Pierre Governors, says it’s not a bad thing, because the routine isn’t really set yet…
The Governors are coming off another state championship, the eighth in the last nine years and the Govs return plenty of talent which includes quarterback Jerren Deal, star tight end Cooper Terwilliger and receiver Carter Schiefelbein who set several school records and nearly broke state records last year. Then you have Porter Hunsley, who scored four times in the state championship last season and expanded his role as the running back late in the season and through the playoffs. Sutton Sonnenschein also returns who led the team with six interceptions. Sturgis, on the other side, return their lead rusher and lead receivers and Steele says preparing for them you can see they are returning some good athletes…
Steele says the keys for Saturday’s game is offensively to not force anything and take what the defense is giving…
Coverage Saturday begins at 4:30 with kickoff at 5:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Blake Dean on the call.
