The Pierre Governor soccer teams would get a split on the day to begin the season at home with the boys falling to a tough Jefferson squad 5-0 while the girls would grab a 3-1 win.
In the boys game, the Cavaliers look like a team poised to make a deep playoff run again as they scored two quick goals from Oakley McMillan and led 2-0 at the break. A couple of fouls in the box in the second half led to two penalty kick goals taken by Kevin Ochoa Ochoa to help seal the win as the Cavs pressured and forced the Governors to play a lot of defensive throughout the afternoon. The Cavaliers move to 1-0-1 with the win tying with Brandon Valley 3-3 in its other game.
In the girls game, Cameron Larson would open the scoring near the end of the first half to give Pierre a 1-0 lead. Jefferson would get the game tied in the second half, but last year’s top goal scorer for Pierre, Lexie Hillmer would net the game winner giving the Govs a 2-1 lead. Aubrey Fischer would set up Devyn Van Roekel to put the game away as the Govs grab the 3-1 win to open the season. Emlyn Swanson would get the win in net for Pierre. Jefferson falls to 0-1-1 after tying Brandon Valley 1-1 in its first game.
Pierre will take on Watertown next coming up on Thursday for another boys and girls doubleheader at home. The boys will play first at 4:00 with the girls game to follow at the PILC Fields.
