PIERRE, (KCCR) — The Norris Volunteer Fire Department in western Mellette County getting a 10-thousand dollar grant from the State Farm insurance Good Neighbor Firefighter Safety Program. The program is done in conjunction with the National Volunteer Fire Council. The Norris department is one of 150 across the nation and three, including Norris, in South Dakota to get the money, meaning a total of one-point-five million dollars has been collectively awarded to volunteer fire department across the country. The money will help the departments purchase needed equipment to enhance responder safety and better protect their communities. In addition to the Norris department, volunteer fire departments in Gayville and Springfield are getting 10-thousand dollar grants. Eighty-two percent of fire departments across the country are made up of volunteer staff that operate on limited budgets. State Farm and National Volunteer Fire Council first partnered in 2024 to help with the grants, having given away four million dollars for equipment needs.
