The Pierre Governor tennis team will be in action today and this weekend to start the 2026 season as the school year gets underway at the Griffin Park Tennis Courts in Pierre.
The Governors will be getting five duals to start the season this weekend as they face three West River teams while also facing two ESD schools. Today, Pierre faces the Stevens Raiders out of Class AA. On Friday, Pierre will take on Class A team Rapid City Christian before facing ESD rival Yankton. Then on Saturday, Pierre will get its second Class A contest facing Spearfish before finishing the weekend taking on Class A and ESD foe Huron. Half of the dual this weekend can go far into a high seeding at both the ESD and state tournament, although as far away as possible with the season just starting. The Governors have moved to Class AA in tennis this year.
Pierre returns Elise Bowers, Eliza Mayer, Adrian Hand and Gemma Stangeland all now moving into their junior year with only Breanna Tedrow and Amara Dell having graduated with a lot of varsity experience from last year’s team.
Lisa Blake takes over as head coach after Megan Bauck stepped down and Blake says she’s co-coaching with Matt Gill and Terri Johnson and it’s been a great start working with them…
Blake and the coaching staff have been pleased with the effort and work the girls are putting in prior to the first set of competition and wants it to continue this weekend…

Pierre faces Stevens at 4:00 today at Griffin Park before then starting at 8:00 AM on Friday against Rapid City Christian at LaBarge Courts with Yankton back at Griffin Park around 1:00 and then at 8:00 AM on Saturday against Spearfish before finishing against Huron all at the Griffin Park tennis courts in Pierre.
