PIERRE, (KCCR) — Drought’s grip on South Dakota seems to be getting tighter by the week. This week’s update of the U-S Drought Monitor shows that statewide, drought-free areas make up less than 10-percent of soil moisture conditions across the state. Abnormally dry areas are now at 90-% with 76-percent under moderate, 38-percent severe and 13-percent extreme drought. North central South Dakota has seen the largest growth of drought this week. A large area of extreme drought has developed in Corson, Ziebach and Dewey Counties. Extreme drought increased 34-percent this week in the southeast and northwest corners of the county. Severe drought in Dewey County is 96-percent. Extreme drought increased 15-percent from zero last week in Ziebach County. Thirty-seven percent of Ziebach County is under severe drought. Sully County saw extreme drought grow by 11-percent in the last week with other drought levels unchanged. In Potter County, extreme drought increased 10-percent to 16-percent. An area of no drought remains across southeast Stanley and Hyde, southeast Hughes, northern Jones and Lyman and northeast Buffalo Counties.
