Severe Thunderstorms Drop Big Hail Strong Winds Across West Central South Dakota Tuesday

WHITE RIVER, (KCCR) — A summer of strong severe windstorms continued Tuesday night as winds gusting to 100 miles an hour knocked out power and damaged buildings across central and south central South Dakota. The storm started it’s 273 mile trek across South Dakota in Harding County where power was knocked out to hundreds of Grand Electric customers who also dodged three-inch hail. Over 11-hundred were without power in Todd County and over 500 in Mellette County where winds at White River measured 96 miles an hour. A bus barn was blown over in White River around midnight. A 102 mile an hour gust was reported along Interstate 90 four miles east of Cactus Flat in Jackson County west of Kadoka. Winds near Newell were recorded gusting to 111 miles an hour. Power outages were also reported via the South Dakota Rural Electric Association page in Tripp, Jackson and Ziebach Counties. West Central Electric reported via their Facebook page four transmission structures were down, taking off power to the Belvidere substation with winds in the area at the time clocking in at 98 miles an hour.
