The 2026 Legion Season for South Dakota if officially in the books with Rapid City Post 22 winning the state title two weekends ago and falling in the Central Plains Regional last weekend. Now, the All-State teams have been released with four Eights on the list.
Carter Schiefelbein would receive the first team nomination while Sutton Sonnenschein would be named to the second team All-State list. Carter Templeton and Will Danburg each received honorable mention. For Schiefelbein, he finished as the team leader with .412 batting average with the team leading eight doubles, five triples and three home runs and also finished with the team lead in RBIs with 24 as he Sonnenschein and Hudson Stoeser battled throughout the season for the team lead all having over 20 each. Schiefelbein was one of two guys to have over a 1000 OPS leading the team at 1.147 for those who had 50 at bats or more in the season with Tripp Lindekugel being the other. Schiefelbein also went 1-1 on the mound with two saves as he threw 11 and one third innings with a 1.24 ERA and WHIP while striking out 25 of the 34 batters he retired.
For Sonnenschein, he caught 194 and one third innings throughout the season of the 230 in total as he played in just about every game this summer. He finished with a .358 average, third on the team and had five doubles and a triple with his 23 RBIs. Sonnenschein was very good hitting with runners in scoring position with a .375 average, nearly 20 points higher than his officially batting average. He finished with an .898 OPS and .432 Slugging percentage both being top three on the team in qualified at bats. The pitching staff had a 3.92 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. Sonnenschein caught 18 runners trying to steal for a 26% throw out percentage.
Templeton and Danburg were the 1-2 punch for the Eights throughout the summer as the two led the team in innings pitched with 50 and one third for Templeton and 37 and one third for Danburg. Templeton had a 5-2 record with a 2.50 ERA and 1.45 WHIP striking out 45 and a batting average against at .220. Danburg was very similar with a 2.06 ERA and 1.31 WHIP going 4-2 with a save. His batting average against was .234 as the Eights relied on those two to be their top two starters.
