FORT PIERRE, (KCCR) — American Legion Stanley Post 20 has been awarded over one-point-two million dollars for the support of Veteran transportation needs. The money is coming from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs’ Highly Rural Transportation Grant program. The grants help Veterans in rural areas with free transportation to Veterans Affairs or V-A authorized health care facilities. Acting V-A Black Hills Medical Center Director David Hintgen says the grants will help them reach Veterans in remove areas and make sure those Vets can get to appointments safely, reliably and without stress. The V-A has awarded over six-million dollars in grants so far this year through the H-R-T-G program. The program started in 2014 and has helped the V-A award over 46 million dollars to organizations in 15 states, U-S territories and Tribal lands. Veteran Service Organizations or State Veteran Service Agencies that serve counties with fewer than seven people per square mile are eligible to apply for the funding.
