WESSINGTON, (KCCR) — A teenager from Highmore has lost his life in a vehicle/train crash in Wessington. According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol a 16 year-old male was traveling north on 374th Avenue in a 2008 Ford F-150 pickup. At the same time a Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern freight train was traveling east into Beadle County through the Wessington city limits. The Ford drove through the railroad crossing and was struck by the train, killing the driver. The name of the driver has not been released pending notification of family. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The crash happened around 1:45 Wednesday morning. The Highmore-Harrold School District Facebook page says counseling services and support services will be available for student and staff in the coming days. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
