PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Fort Thompson man has been sentenced to federal prison for 17 years on a Second-Degree Murder charge. U-S Attorney Ron Parsons says U-S District Judge Eric Schulte also sentenced 19 year-old Jami Johnson to five years of supervised release after the prison term. Johnson was indicted on the charge by a federal grand jury in August of 2025. He pleaded guilty at the end of April. Parsons says on August 11th of last year, a group of young adults attended an outdoor gathering near Lower Brule. Johnson and the victim were at the gathering. An argument took place between Johnson and another person. Both men took out firearms and fired in the direction of the first victim. That shot struck the victim in the head, killing him instantly. A second person, not involved in the argument was struck and killed by a second bullet in the next and was mortally wounded. The man arguing with Johnson took his own life, later. Parsons says it was a horrifying and senseless act of violence and hopes the sentenced can offer some measure of justice and in time, peace to the family.
