It would be two really well played baseball games at Hyde Stadium, but Pierre Post 8 couldn’t get the breaks to fall their way dropping the second game of the series 2-0 to Watertown Post 17 in a 2-0 series loss on Thursday, ending the season.
Markus Pitkin would have both RBIs for Watertown with a two out RBI single in the bottom of the first and a one out RBI triple in the sixth. The Eights would be held to just five hits as Hudson Stoeser had two of the five including a two out triple in the fifth, but Pierre couldn’t score him. Pierre had just seven men reach base, but only two reached with less than two outs. Stoeser led off the third with a single and Will Danburg led off the seventh with a walk, but a double play stopped the momentum as Hunter Halajian would throw a complete game five hitter to help Watertown sweep the series advancing to the state tournament. Sutton Sonnenschein, Tripp Lindekugel and Porter Hunsley each had a hit. Danburg would be tagged with the loss giving up just two runs on six hits over five and one third innings pitched. Carter Schiefelbein had two strikeouts in the two men he faced on the mound.
Watertown advances to the state tournament and will play on Tuesday in the first round while Pierre’s season ends at 16-19-1. Bridger Babcock and Hudson Shaffer are the only two seniors from this year’s team to graduate.
