PIERRE, (KCCR) — Drought-free areas continue to shrink in South Dakota as drought intensity is picking up. Drought is rapidly expanding across the northern Missouri River valley. An area of severe drought introduced last week has now been upgraded to extreme D-Three drought. Severe drought has grown to the northeast of the area of extreme drought and moderate drought has expanded to the northwest across Dewey, Corson and northeast Ziebach County. Potter County is now 100-percent moderate and 95-percent severe drought with six-percent of the county under extreme drought. Moderate drought increased four-percent this week to 77-percent, while severe drought grew 21-percent and extreme drought is at two-percent. Dewey County is nearly fully in moderate drought, 14-percent in severe drought and three-percent extreme drought. A drought-free area remains in central South Dakota including southern Stanley and Hughes, northern Jones and Lyman and parts of Buffalo and Hyde Counties.
