The Pierre Governor boys track and field team came up just short of making the podium as a team at the state track and field competition last month, but the Govs still had individuals leave with hardware and All-State times.
Pierre would receive a state championship from Corde Austin in the long jump as he was the second longest total at the state meet this year. Austin was also named the Field MVP of the entire state tournament as he also placed sixth in triple jump and eighth in the high jump. Austin was one of six All-State times and distances for the Governor boys team in the inaugural All-State list. To be on the All-State list you must be in the top eight of times or distances in the finals across all three classes. The Governors had five other All-State finishes with Carter Schiefelbein in the 800 meters, Lincoln Dilges in the 100 meter hurdles and three relay teams of the 4×100 with Jerren Deal, George Rapp, Porter Hunsley and Karson Walti, the 4×200 of Walti, Deal, Rapp and Schiefelbein and the 4×400 of Deal, Rapp, Schiefelbein and Caleb Morris. The Govs finished in seventh place as a team at 45.5 points. Schleusner says being focused was the key throughout the entire year and it showed as the season continued…
Schiefelbein, Deal, Rapp, Hunsley and Walti all will return from the All-State lists and Schleusner says he’s excited for the 2027 season, but he says the kids are also already excited about next year…
