PIERRE, (KCCR) — A group of Pierre residents closely aligned with the U-S-S Pierre Commissioning and Namesake Committee is taking part in a Navel tradition known as a Tiger cruise. Tiger Cruising is an official Navel program that permits civilian guests who are friends or family of deployed crew members to ride on an active Navy ship. The cruises are designed as morale boosting effort for the crew. Taking part in the cruise are Steve and Monica Harding; Chris and Cathy Qualm, Mike Mehlhaff Senior and Junior and Johnny Cash Mehlhaff. U-S-S Pierre Namesake Committee chair Mike Mehlhaff Jr. says the Pierre contingent has shipped South Dakota favorites Tiger Meat and Scotcheroos to San Diego for the Pierre’s crew from Dakota Butcher. The Pierre group met the crew for lunch on Sunday to celebrate the U-S Army’s birthday. The Pierre sailors will be on the trip until Wednesday. Meanwhile, a crew visit is planned to bring U-S-S Pierre sailors to Pierre from June 28th to July 5th for the Interdependence Day holiday. Tiger Cruises first took place on Navy vessels back in 1975.
