Pierre Post 8 would fall 11-3 and 7-3 Friday night on the road to the Brookings Bandits Post 74 in a doubleheader sweep as the Eights open the season at 0-4.
Pierre jumped out to a lead in the top of the first in both games as the Eights led 2-0 after one and a half, but Brookings would strike for five runs in the bottom of the second to get the lead they would never relinquish in game one. Bridger Babcock would be the one to reach on an error scoring both runs in the top of the first, but an error in the bottom of the second would place the first run for Brookings and then Jude Meendering would tie with an RBI walk, and back to back singles by Tre Christopherson and Baker Hansen made it 4-2 before an RBI groundout by Jase Bauer. Hudson Stoeser would score after Sutton Sonnenschein would be picked off between first and second and it was all the Eights could get as Pierre had just six hits in the game, two by Sonnenschein. Carter Templeton would be tagged with the loss giving up eight runs, three earned on six hits with five walks and three strikeouts. Landry Van Roekel would give up just one earned run over two and a third innings on four hits with three walks and a strikeout. Talon Hyde had four RBIs for Brookings.
In game two, Sonnenschein would get an RBI double to put Pierre up 1-0 in the top of the first but a two RBI triple by Bauer made it 2-1 in the first as Brookings made it 3-1 after two. Alec Eilers would score on a pass ball to make it 3-2 in the top of the fourth but back-to-back RBI doubles by Meendering and Nolan Krogman made it 5-2 and after a Sonnenschein RBI to make it 5-3, it was as close as the Eights would get. An RBI single for Meendering in the bottom of the sixth made it 7-3 and the Bandits held on for the sweep. Stoeser would grit out five and a third innings on the mound giving up seven runs on nine hits with four walks and four strikeouts. Ryker Edson had the final two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Edson had two of the four hits in the loss.
Pierre, now 0-4, will travel to face Sioux Falls West on Tuesday with a 3:00 first pitch. KCCR’s next broadcast will be on Wednesday at home against Sioux Falls East.
