PIERRE, (KCCR) — The impact of recent rains is not being reflected in the latest update of the U-S Drought Monitor for South Dakota. This week, substantial increases in moderate drought are being seen through central South Dakota. Hughes County saw moderate drought increase 65-percent in the last week to now at 92-percent. Similar increases are being reflected in Stanley County, where moderate drought increased 67-percent to now 69-percent. The northern third of Stanley County remains abnormally dry. Moderate drought is up in Hyde County by 31-percent; Hand County 37-percent and Haakon County, a 44-percent increase. Jones County is now 100-percent in moderate drought , which is up 12-percent from last week. Statewide, only nine-point-seven percent of the state is listed as drought-free, which is down 11-percent from last week. Abnormally dry areas increased 10-percent with moderate drought growing seven-percent. Severe and extreme drought did not increase this week.
