The Pierre Governors had two RBIs from Carter Schiefelbein and a complete game from Carter Templeton to win 3-1 in game one of the best-of-three series against Mitchell on Friday night.
Schiefelbein’s first RBI in the bottom of the third was the first hit of the ballgame for either team as it was an unearned run with Bridger Babcock reaching on an error to start the inning. Mitchell would tie the game up with an RBI from Ian Weber in the top of the fifth, but Schiefelbein again had the RBI single to give Pierre the lead. Porter Hunsley would drive him in to add on the insurance run, but Templeton didn’t even need it as he went the distance with four hits and one run on six strikeouts. He was able to strand the tying runs on second and third with only one out in the top of the seventh with a strikeout and foul out to win the ballgame. Hudson Stoeser went 1-2 for the Govs and a run scored as the only other hit for Pierre. Jacob Ebert allowed just four hits with all four in the two innings in which Pierre scored.
Pierre will need to win just one game on Saturday to advance to the state tournament. Coverage begins at 11:40 with first pitch at 12:00. If Mitchell win’s game two, game three will be played immediately following game two in the winner-take-all game. Jon Winkler has the call on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
