The Pierre Governor baseball team would take advantage of errors in game two of the best of three series to sweep Mitchell with a 6-2 win on Saturday, advancing to the state quarterfinals next Friday.
The Govs would go down 1-0 in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Stratton Forst, but would answer in the top of the third as Carter Schiefelbein would fly out to center and as Jerren Deal would tag up to go to third, the throw in was misplayed by the shortstop allowing Deal to score tying the game at 1-1. In the top of the fifth a wild pitch would give the Govs a 2-1 lead, an RBI single for Porter Hunsley and a bases loaded walk for Tripp Lindekugel would allow Pierre to lead 4-1. Hudson Stoeser made a spectacular diving catch to end the bottom of the fifth keeping the Govs in front and another bases loaded error for Mitchell in the seventh allowed the Govs to extend the lead to 6-2 as Hunsley would get the final three outs, giving the Govs its first state tournament berth since 2023. Will Danburg would get the win on the mound going six innings allowing two runs, one earned on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Pierre advances to play on Friday in the quarterfinals. As of this writing the opponent and time are still to be determined, but KCCR will have coverage on Friday.
