Governors Face Mitchell in Playoff Series

The Pierre Governor baseball team is home this weekend taking on Mitchell in the first round best-of-three series with a trip to the state tournament on the line as the Govs will play Friday and Saturday.

These two teams met back the day after Easter on a cool Monday afternoon as Mitchell would sweep the Governors at home to put Pierre to 2-4 at the time. From there, Pierre rattled off 14 wins in a row before falling to Roosevelt with just six games remaining in the season. Pierre would go 2-4 in the final six games but still finish at 20-8 overall for the season claiming the sixth seed in state. It was the first two games of the season for Mitchell and they started 7-1 on the year and lost 10 of the last 15 games to close the season dropping to the 11 seed. Pierre is led by Carter Schiefelbein’s .477 batting average while having the team lead seven doubles and five triples and have stolen 26 bases. Sutton Sonnenschein, who missed the final three games of the season with a leg injury, led the team with 29 RBIs and a .385 batting average. Pierre has a lot of options on who they may want to throw in game one and game two with Brennan McCullough, Carter Templeton and Will Danburg all throwing 36 innings or more and have combined for 11 pitching wins between the three. There’s also Jonathan Neuharth who is 2-0 in five appearances and four starts as the Govs can have Mitchell guessing leading up to the lineup exchange who will be throwing. Ian Weber and Carter McCormick each hit .339 to lead the team with Jaxson Hartman leading the team with 14 RBIs. Mitchell also has four pitchers who have thrown over 20 innings all starting five games.
