PIERRE, (KCCR) — A countywide burn ban in Stanley County has been lifted by the Stanley County Commission. However normal burning restrictions remain in place across the county. The burn ban ordinance will automatically apply if and when the National Weather Service issues a Red Flag Warning for Stanley County or the South Dakota Grassland Fire Danger Index for the county enters the Very High or Extreme categories. With the ban being pulled back, activities like use of burn barrels with a 30-foot clear zones and permanent fire and grates can be used again, however all of those are subject to temporary suspension if the Grassland Fire Danger Index enters the top two highest categories of Very High or Extreme or the issuance for the county of a Red Flag Warning. National Weather Service criteria for the issuance of a Red Flag Warning includes when warm temperatures, very low humidity and strong winds combine to create critical fire weather conditions or when dry lighting, lightning with little rain are possible.
