A total of 19 innings were played on Thursday in Pierre as the Governors would walk off a nine inning game 3-2, but fall to Stevens in game two, 3-1 in eight innings.
In game one, Pierre had the help of two unearned runs in the bottom of the second with an RBI from Tripp Lindekugel to take a 2-0 lead. However, two unearned runs would score for Stevens in the top of the fourth with a two RBI triple by Bridger Mez to tie the game and it would remain tied until the ninth inning. In the top of the ninth, Brennen McCullough would get the first two outs and be removed from the game because of pitch count and Porter Hunsley, in relief would end up loading the bases with two outs and getting a strikeout to end the inning. He would lead off with a single, a single from Will Eilers would make it first and third and then with the bases loaded, Parker O’Bryan would swing and miss at a pitch in the dirt that would get by the catcher and score Hunsley for the walk off wild pitch. McCullough would get a no decision with eight and two thirds innings allowing two unearned runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
In game two, Eilers would open the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI single as the Govs led 1-0 until Caiden Comparetto tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI in the third. Again, the game remained tied until the top of eighth when two unearned runs would score with an RBI from Comparetto again and a wild pitch to bring in both runs. Pierre would be retired in the bottom of the eight falling in the doubleheader. Bridger Babcock was sensational on the mound throwing only 78 pitches in full eight innings allowing just one earned run on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts, but he would be matched by Brady Waddell who gave up just five hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts.
Pierre moves to 16-6 in South Dakota play and 20-6 overall on the season. The Govs wrap up the regular season on Saturday taking on the Jefferson Cavaliers. Coverage will be at 12:45 with first pitch at 1:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
