FORT PIERRE, (KCCR) — The man who founded the Cable News Network or C-N-N in 1980, Ted Turner has passed away. While Turner is best known for forming a media empire with entities like television network T-N-T and the cable superstation W-T-B-S; he also had ties to central South Dakota. Turner Enterprises owns nearly two-million acres of ranch land in seven states. His South Dakota ranches are in Stanley County. Bad River Ranch is approximately 148-thousand acres of Stanley County land and is used for bison production and conservation according to the Bad River Ranch website. Turner Enterprises also purchased the former Triple U Ranch in 2015. It’s now the Standing Butte Ranch, but previously served as a filming location in northern Stanley County for the 1990 movie Dances with Wolves. In December of 2017, grant funds totaling nearly 30-thousand dollars connected to the Turner Foundation were donated to the Stanley County School District for various projects including student council, theater and Stanley County F-F-A The Stanley County School District has received 57-thousand dollars over the years from the Turner Foundation. Turner was 87 years old.
