The Pierre Governor baseball team had its 14 game winning streak snapped in game on of the weekend, but would win three straight to close the weekend splitting with Roosevelt 8-7 in the loss and 12-4 in the win and then sweeping Sturgis 8-4 and 7-0 on Sunday.
In game one on Saturday, Roosevelt would use a four run fifth inning to beat Pierre by just one as Tucker DeHann and Carson Breidenbach each had two RBIs with two hits each as Roosevelt would get four extra base hits with two doubles and two triples. Sutton Sonnenschein would get three hits and three RBIs as Parker O’Bryan and Bridger Babcock each had an RBI. Tripp Lindekugel drove in the run to make it 8-7 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI double, but would be stranded at second to end the game as the Govs were out hit 12-10 in the loss. Brennen McCullough would go four innings giving up six runs, five earned on nine hits with three strikeouts as he would be tagged with the loss.
In game two, Pierre used a six run third and five run sixth to propel them to the 12-4 win to split the two games behind Jackson Goodman’s 3-4 four RBI game as Goodman had a triple in the win. Sonnenschein, Lindekugel and Babcock each had an RBI in the second game as well as did Hudson Stoeser as Pierre used three pitchers to get the win with Jonathan Neuharth going the first three innings allowing just two runs on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts while Carter Schiefelbein had his season debut on the mound going the following three innings allowing a run on two hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Porter Hunsley got the final three outs with an unearned run.
Pierre then traveled across the state to face Sturgis in a doubleheader and with a 20 minute rain delay in the first game, but the four run sixth for the Govs gave them the win. Hunsley had an RBI groundout in the top of the third and it was 1-0 after three and a half when the rain delay began. Will Danburg would get through the fourth unscathed and Sonnenschein RBI in the fifth made it 2-0 before the Scoopers would get 4-2 lead with three RBI singles. Babcock would come in relief to shut the door in the fifth and hold the Scoopers without a run the remaining two innings. Aydan Johnson, Schiefelbein and Sonnenschein had RBI singles in the top of the sixth to give Pierre the 6-4 lead and Schiefelbein had the final hit with a two RBI double in the top of the seventh to pick up the game one win, 8-4.
Carter Templeton would be magnificent on the mound in game two throwing a complete game one hit shutout, giving up the one hit with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Templeton would throw an immaculate inning in the bottom of the fifth on his way to a 12 strikeout performance. Babcock had the biggest hit in the 7-0 win as he had the two out, two RBI double to give Pierre the 2-0 lead. Three errors in the sixth helped the final five runs be unearned with Sonnenschein and Lindekugel each getting an RBI in the sixth.
Pierre is now 19-5 on the season, 15-5 in South Dakota games and winners of 17 of 18 heading into the final week of the regular season. Pierre will host Stevens on Thursday and Jefferson on Saturday. All four games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
