PIERRE, (KCCR) — Three seats on the Hughes County Commission are open this year. Four people are competing for those spots. Two of them attended a candidate forum last week sponsored by the Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce. One issue facing the county is how to recover the pending loss of revenue from the State of South Dakota when the Department of Corrections starts housing female inmates in a new women’s prison in Rapid City. Current County Commission chair Rob Fines says it’s a huge issue with a possible part solution in sight…
Challenger Pat Steber agrees its a major issue for the county and would look into solutions if elected…
Fires is a former county Emergency Manager and was first elected to the Commission in 2022. Steber is long-time and current county employee. Incumbents Connie Hohn and Bill Abernathy did not attend the forum. Hohn was out of state for the birth of a grandchild. Abernathy was unavailable to take part.
