PIERRE, (KCCR) — It’s a week behind, but absentee voting in Hughes County can begin today. Hughes County Finance Officer Thomas Oliva says ballots for the 11 different ballot styles for elections in the upcoming June 2nd election have arrived. The ballots arrived Thursday and Oliva says in-person voting will start April 24th during regular business hours at the Hughes County Courthouse. Absentee voting was scheduled to start on April 17th, but due to new state laws and the way the calendar laid out, there wasn’t enough time to certify signature petitions from candidates in a window that would have permitted ballots to be approved before April 17th. Voters can request an absentee ballot through five pm on June 1st, the day prior to the primary election. In-person absentee votes closes at five pm on June 1st. Any mailed in absentee ballots must be to the Auditor’s Office by no later than seven p-m on Election Day. Voters who have submitted applications for ballots will have ballots mailed immediately, once ready. In-person absentee voting will happen at the Auditor’s Office. Voters should make sure to submit absentee ballots early and confirm voter registrations.
