PIERRE, (KCCR) — Rain on Wednesday isn’t likely to make an impact on the U-S Drought Monitor for South Dakota. For starters the rain came too soon to the Thursday release of the most current report on drought for the state. This week much of the state remains unchanged however D-Three Extreme drought has now developed across southern and eastern Tripp County and extreme southern Lyman County in the boot heel region. That area of extreme drought also includes all of Gregory County and much of Charles Mix County along the Missouri River. Elsewhere, extreme drought is being noted in southwest Jackson County, and from there, across most of southwest South Dakota. A third area of extreme drought is being seen from southeastern Charles Mix, southern Bon Homme and Yankton, northwest Clay and southern Turner Counties. Extreme drought makes up 42-percent of Tripp County and five-percent of Lyman County. Ninety-five percent of Lyman County is under moderate drought and 61-percent severe drought. Counties with at least some areas of no drought include Hughes, Sully, Potter, Dewey and Ziebach.
